Look Ma, No Trailer Brakes (at least not enough brakes)

So here's what I've learned from this little experience. Yes indeed brake controllers do go bad with no error or warning codes visible. I installed a new Tekonsha Prodigy (1-4 axle) controller last Monday. The test drive after installation was a success with full braking so we punched out of AZ...

I guess we'll both find out tomorrow.

Look Ma, No Trailer Brakes (at least not enough brakes)

We snowbird in AZ in the winter months and at some point before the temps get into the 90's I always pull all the hubs (triple axle), repack wheel bearings and inspect brakes. This year I had three bad brakes on one side which is a first but not unexpected. I replaced all three with auto...

    macerator

I used a macerator pump for several years when we stayed at my daughters house and the cleanout was 15' above the where we parked the rig. You'll read a lot of people talking about using a 3/4" hose and I'm going to differ with that, bigger is better. My pump actually came with a 1" hose and...

    Zion crowds, any advice?

I've been to Zion many times (the last was two months ago) and yes it can be extremely crowded. The problem is the park itself is only 14 miles from gate to gate and the only parking area for the most part is the visitor center. There are very few spots to pull off and just take in the view...

Beware Camco Water Heater Tank Rinser

This post made me chuckle. I've been using one of those wands (the same one) now for 20 years. I should probably have a look at it. But here's what made me chuckle... A number of years ago I had the epiphany that the tank would drain faster if I could relieve the vacuum in the tank during...

Looking To Buy A New RV? Here's a suggestion.

The same way you or I would check their reputation, word of mouth. If a contractor is an idiot there will be more than one complaint by a customer to the office believe me. If you have a better solution to helping a first time RV buyer please feel free to post it on another thread. I didn't...

Looking To Buy A New RV? Here's a suggestion.

I don't tend to stay in high end RV parks but the ones in the southwest that I do stay in even if they aren't gated require ALL contractors to check in. An RV park (even a cheap one) has a vested interest in trying to ensure that contractors that they allow in have a decent reputation.

Looking To Buy A New RV? Here's a suggestion.

This is why I recommend going to an RV park and inquiring as to a reputable mobile guy. What I didn't mention is that most RV repair places will also do this even if they don't consider themselves "mobile." RV parks (the decent ones at least) have a vested interest in not allowing people with...

Looking To Buy A New RV? Here's a suggestion.

I recently read a post by Dave911 and since what I'm about to say wouldn't be of any use to him now and I didn't want to hijack his thread I'll throw this out there on a new one. I've been living part time in a 5th wheel (snow birding) now for twenty years and I've picked up more than a few...

    Hanging Pictures

We've used adhesive backed Velcro for almost 20 years. My late wife collected copper teapots and she displayed them on top of the kitchen cabinets. I've answered the question dozens of times from visitors "How do those stay up there when you're on the road?" Velcro, same with pictures.

    Wheel Bearings

I'm undoubtedly more neurotic about this subject than most. Our 5ver now has close to 70k miles on it since 2008 and gets the bearings pulled, inspected and repacked once a year. We've slowed our travel mileage considerably over the last few years and only get a little over 2k miles a year on...

Grand Design RL27 Fireplace current draw?

As you have probably deduced by now, those fireplaces are nothing more than a space heater. Having said that there are much more efficient space heaters out there. We're currently semi-boondocked at a friends house with just a 20 amp service. If you pay attention you can run quite nicely on...

    Norcold N811RT Fridge Door Failure

So I finally found the last two hinge reinforcements in existence apparently and they were on amazon for the paltry sum of $59.95!!! I installed the plate yesterday and what a difference it makes in the way the door closes. I was going to offer the opposite plate (which I don't need as i have...

    Norcold N811RT Fridge Door Failure

So I ordered the very last door hinge reinforcement in existence on Amazon a few minutes ago. Hopefully I'll get a shipping confirmation from Mr. Bezo's assistant shortly, otherwise I'm gonna have to order a new door. From the looks of the reinforcement it should work pretty good with my JB...
