I would try Teknor Apex NeverKink, boat and camper, Drinking Water Safe Hose. My friend recommended me this one because I don't want the coil up hose either.

Yeah I tried to built something on my own too but then my homemade car construction didn't hold up and therefore I also damaged my Kayak little bit. Then I realized that I shouldn't save money on these kind of things and I bought Evenkeel from Yakima. Best thing I could have done.
