Towing and camping with a mid-size pickup truck

Ended up with a new Ford Ranger XLT with the FX4 package. Already took one trip to Moab and love it so far. I can see the rationale of getting a full size over a mid size but I didn’t want to deal with driving such a large vehicle on a daily basis and it wouldn’t fit in my garage very well...

Towing and camping with a mid-size pickup truck

I didn’t consider a van. I hate mini-vans and a full size van, while useful, wouldn’t fit in my garage. But I can see why they would work well as a towing/traveling vehicle.

Towing and camping with a mid-size pickup truck

That's true, but I'm towing a teardrop that weighs maybe 1700 pounds when loaded. I'm mostly thinking about gear management pros and cons, storage in the bed vs storage inside an SUV.

That seems like a good option - cap with a slide out or drawer system, but costly!

This is my thinking. There are more good options for pickups (esp. if I want off road performance), but for camping and traveling, I like the indoor space of an SUV.

Towing and camping with a mid-size pickup truck

Hey all. I've been towing my Hiker Trailer "square drop" with a Subaru Outback XT for a couple years and it's worked OK. But for a variety of reasons, I'm strongly considering a new vehicle and a mid-sized pick up is high on my list. I've never had a pickup and can see some pontetial pros and...

    Fall vaccinations?

Will definitely get a flu shot. Need to do that soon because I have some air travel coming up in October. I just had Covid (very mild this time) so I may hold off on the new Covid shot for a while.

New here, regular camper with my "square drop" trailer

Very true. I used to love the sound of rain on a tent. To be honest, we have not had a substantially rainy day with this trailer yet. There was one evening this summer where thunderstorms started around 7 pm. We hung out under the awning for a while and just went to bed at 8. It rained a lot...

New here, regular camper with my "square drop" trailer

The back of the trailer has a 24 inch deep “galley” with shelves. Much of the stuff goes there. The chairs and few other things go in the roof basket. Coolers, propane, and water go in the car. That said, when it rains, we deploy that humongous awning and take shelter under it. We have not yet...

New here, regular camper with my "square drop" trailer

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and looking forward to engaging. My wife and I have a Hiker Trailer that we tow with a Subaru Outback. We often boondocks, but stay in campgrounds as well. We're located in Colorado and have traveled with our trailer extensively in Colorado, as well as in Wyoming...

    Potable Water before boondocking

I've used iOverlander to find water sources and usually carry a filter as well.

    John Martin Reservoir SWA

I think it's really because management for the site switched from State CPW back to the US Army Corps of Engineers and I think the Corps generally does not allow dispersed camping on lands they manage

    Showering!

We use a NEMO Helio water tank. It works pretty well, but there are two problems: 1) the O ring on the cap comes off too easily (and then you can't pressurize it) and 2) the carry strap tore off after about 15 months and 10 or so trips with it. NEMO was kind enough to send me spare o-rings free...
