Assuming the paint is the same type/kind and not some specialty blend, why would a red one cost more than a black one?

I think it is because the pigments used to make red paint are more expensive than for other colors.

Actually, I got to thinking about it and I think it's simply because red is more popular. Supply and demand, I guess.

When we were building our modular house in WA, the factory offered several pre-packaged paint schemes. The house was going in the middle of a forested lot and Cindy wanted to reverse one of the schemes, painting the house green with tan trim instead of vice-versa. The factory representative balked at the request until I asked if one color paint cost more than the other. After we left Cindy said she was ready to cancel the purchase if she couldn't get the colors she wanted.
